Hello. I'd like to introduce myself. I'm not just a bodiless voice on the internet. Programming. But I’m not a mother either. I don’t have a job. I’m a student. In eighth grade. Surprising right? Well, it shouldn’t be. When you read a serious article or story online, you assume it’s by an adult. Or at least a studious college student. No one ever imagines that maybe some young kids care about politics or world views or making a difference. No, they’re not old enough, they’re not mature enough. People see our generation as a generation of rebels. Kids who don’t care about authorities, don’t care about school, don’t care about their parents. And they have a good reason to when we go about doing all the things we do and talking about our own parents in horrible ways. We pretend to have good values when people discuss them, but do we really use them? Teens hear the occasional story about some kid who did an amazing thing. “Wow! This person is so brave and kind!” we say. We post it on our social media maybe. And then we ignore it. Forget about it. We say we wish we could be like them, raising money for a charity or volunteering at a shelter or making it through a hard sickness. But do we even try? The people in this country are some of the most privileged people. We have all we could ever want. We get the newest phones, newest clothes. But we still want and beg for more. Meanwhile, people in other places struggle to find water, to find clothes, or just to survive the wars going on around them. But do we care? No. Why should we? We have whatever we need. Our generation is so ignorant of anything that doesn’t affect us. Do I claim to be any different? No. I’m a Christian, but there’s no doubt I still do these things. I have spent my entire life ignoring the fact that others are being tortured. Going through horrifying things. I hurt people. You may say, how can I do anything? I can’t go to some country to help, I’m still in school, not old enough. NEVER say that again. Everyone can do something. Give some canned food to send to people who don’t have any. Save up a little of your allowance to donate. If you’re feeling really brave, start your own charity organization. Or do something as small as sending, tweeting, posting this link to your friends. Do Something. Change the world’s view of our generation. YOU have the power.
